Preparing for Travel with Kids: Simple Packing Tips That Make Vacation Easier

Traveling with kids can feel super overwhelming, but being prepared at least sets you up for success. A little planning ahead can make the entire experience smoother, from the airport to your final destination.

When I think about preparing for a trip with kids, I break it into four main parts.

First, what are they going to wear?

Second, how do you pack efficiently?

Third, what activities will keep them busy when technology is not an option?

And fourth, snacks and meal preparation.

Looking ahead at your destination and weather is important. Is there a chance of rain? Will you be doing a lot of walking? Are there times when kids will be in and out of the pool? Thinking through these details helps determine what clothing and footwear you actually need. Shoes are especially important because you may need something comfortable for walking or waterproof options for poolside days.

I recently shared an Instagram series about packing for warm vacations with tips like these, and here is a deeper look at how I approach it.

Part 1: Packing for Toddler Girls

Years ago, my husband joked that I could pack one bag for six people. At the time we were traveling with car seats, strollers, diaper bags, and not to mention the actual children, so packing efficiently really mattered.

For my girls, I developed a simple formula: dresses, leggings, and a lightweight layer.

This combination covered everything. On a chilly plane ride, they could wear a dress with leggings and a zip up hoodie. Once we arrived somewhere warm, they could remove the leggings and hoodie and instantly be ready for vacation.

The dress also doubled as a pool cover up, a dinner outfit, and an easy everyday option. It simplified decisions and reduced how much we needed to pack.

Part 2: Packing for Toddler Boys

I quickly realized my son essentially lived in his swimsuit on vacation. Because of that, I always recommend bringing multiple swim bottoms so there is always a dry pair ready to go.

If you choose swim trunks that are more tailored and have pockets, they can double as regular shorts. Kids can wear them to lunch, to activities, and even into restaurants, then jump right back into the pool afterward. It makes transitions effortless and keeps packing minimal.

Part 3: Activities for Travel Days and Downtime

Activities are incredibly helpful when technology is not available or when kids simply need a quiet moment.

Some favorites include:

  • Markers and sketchbooks

  • Activity books

  • Interactive toys for babies

  • Small surprises for the plane or restaurants

Having a few dedicated travel activities can make a huge difference in how smoothly the day goes for everyone.

Part 4: Snacks and Meal Preparation

Snacks are often the secret to preventing travel meltdowns. Familiar foods help kids feel comfortable in new environments, and having easy options on hand reduces stress when schedules get off track.

Preparing ahead for meals and snacks can make outings, flights, and excursions much more enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a trip with kids is a big task, but the more prepared you are, the more you can relax and enjoy the experience together. The goal is not perfection. It is creating space for fun memories and smoother days.
