3 Tips for the Best Fall Outfits for Kids

How to keep little ones comfortable through chilly mornings, warm afternoons, and everything in between.

Fall is one of our favorite seasons for children’s clothing, but it can also be one of the trickiest times to get dressed.

Here in Michigan, mornings can start out downright chilly, only to turn into surprisingly warm afternoons. What feels perfect at school drop-off might be far too warm by recess.

After years of helping families dress their little ones, we’ve learned that the secret to comfortable fall outfits isn’t a heavier wardrobe. It’s choosing the right layers.

Here are three simple tips to make getting dressed in the morning a little easier.

1. Start Light and Layer Up

The most important piece of a fall outfit is often the one underneath.

Start with a soft, breathable cotton T-shirt or lightweight long-sleeve top. This is especially helpful for boys who tend to run warm, even when the temperatures outside are cool.

From there, add a layer that’s easy to take on and off throughout the day.

Some of our favorite options include:

  • Cardigans: Easy to slip off when the afternoon warms up.
  • Zip-up sweatshirts: Comfortable, practical, and perfect for active kids.
  • Lightweight jackets: Great for chilly mornings and easy to fold into a backpack or hang in a locker.

When temperatures dip into the 50s, a lightweight vest can be another great option. And once mornings reach the upper 40s or lower 50s, we recommend reaching for a cozy fleece jacket.

The goal is to keep kids comfortable without bundling them up in heavy winter clothing before they really need it.

2. Choose Comfortable Bottoms for Cool Mornings

Even when the afternoon forecast calls for sunshine, those early morning temperatures can make shorts feel a little too chilly.

This is the time of year when we start transitioning toward lightweight pants that provide coverage without being too warm.

Our favorites include:

  • Lightweight jeans: A classic choice that pairs easily with sweaters and sweatshirts.
  • Soft leggings: Perfect under dresses or paired with longer tops.
  • Jogger pants: Comfortable enough for the playground but warm enough for cooler mornings.

Look for soft fabrics and comfortable waistbands that allow kids to move freely throughout the day.

Fall dressing should feel easy, not restrictive.

3. Don’t Forget the Shoes and Outer Layers

One of the easiest things to overlook when dressing kids for fall is footwear.

Even when the afternoon temperatures are warm, mornings can bring damp grass, wet sidewalks, and chilly playgrounds.

That’s why we recommend transitioning away from sandals and open-toed shoes this time of year.

Instead, choose comfortable closed-toe shoes or sneakers that keep little feet protected and work for everything from the classroom to the playground.

And don’t forget that final outer layer before heading out the door.

A lightweight jacket, vest, or fleece can make all the difference during those chilly morning walks into school.

The best part? These pieces are easy to remove and tuck away once the sun comes out.

A Little Planning Makes Fall Mornings Easier

You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe every time the weather changes.

A few comfortable basics, versatile layering pieces, and practical bottoms can carry your little ones through the unpredictable early weeks of fall.

And while we’re enjoying these beautiful autumn days, there’s no need to rush into heavy winter coats just yet. Those colder days will be here soon enough!
