Weathering the Storms Together: A Note From My Urban Toddler

Weathering the Storms Together: A Note From My Urban Toddler

If you've lived in Michigan for any length of time, you know that no two summers are ever quite the same.

This year has brought its share of challenges. Extreme heat. Powerful storms. Power outages. Days when wildfire smoke has kept families indoors because the air simply wasn't healthy to breathe.

As a small business owner, I feel these moments right alongside our customers.

When families are focused on keeping cool, replacing food after a power outage, or deciding whether it's safe for their children to play outside, shopping naturally moves down the priority list. And that's okay. We understand.

What I've learned after nearly twenty years of owning My Urban Toddler is that every season brings challenges. We've experienced the uncertainty of opening a new business, relocating stores, navigating economic changes, and making it through COVID. Those experiences have taught me something incredibly valuable: there will always be circumstances outside of our control.

Instead of spending energy worrying about what we can't change, we focus on what we can.

We continue searching for beautiful clothing and meaningful gifts. We stay on schedule with our vendors. We prepare months in advance for the seasons we know are coming.

Right now, that means looking ahead to back to school, football Saturdays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, holiday travel, and Christmas. It's why you'll start seeing backpacks, creative activities, thoughtful gifts, and our University of Michigan children's sweaters arriving long before the first leaves begin to change. While today's weather may be unpredictable, tomorrow's milestones are already on their way.

One of the unexpected blessings of being a small business owner is the friendships that develop with other local retailers. Some days, it's simply encouraging to know someone else understands exactly what you're experiencing.

I often find myself talking with Laura, owner of Fern Boutique in Ann Arbor. We share ideas, celebrate wins, work through challenges, and remind each other that difficult days don't define a business. Those conversations are a powerful reminder that behind every local storefront is a person who genuinely cares about serving their community.

When I scroll through social media, I see many other independent businesses facing the same obstacles. Whether it's weather, rising costs, changing shopping habits, or unexpected disruptions, we're all finding ways to adapt while continuing to show up each day.

We're also mindful that families are navigating these same challenges. Some children have had outdoor camps canceled. Others have spent days indoors because of poor air quality or health concerns. Summer hasn't looked quite the way many imagined it would.

That's why every visit to our store, every online order, every gift purchased, and every recommendation to a friend means more than you may realize.

When you take a moment to type myurbantoddler.com instead of automatically heading to a large online marketplace, you're choosing to invest in your local community. You're helping independent businesses continue doing what they love: creating welcoming spaces, offering carefully curated products, and providing personal service that simply can't be replicated by an algorithm.

We never take that support for granted.

As we move toward a new season, we're filled with hope. There are backpacks to pack, first days of school to celebrate, football weekends to enjoy, birthdays to surprise, holidays to anticipate, and memories waiting to be made.

No matter what challenges come our way, we'll keep showing up, preparing for what's next, and doing our best to help families celebrate childhood.

From all of us at My Urban Toddler, thank you for weathering the storms with us. Your support means more than you know, and we're looking forward to brighter days ahead.
