Article: Letting Go, Holding On

Letting Go, Holding On
This week, I hugged two of my children goodbye as they headed back to college.
No matter how many times you've done it, it never seems to get easier.
The house feels a little quieter. Their bedrooms are a little emptier. And somehow, your heart feels both incredibly full and just a little broken all at once.
As I stood there watching them drive away, I couldn't help but think about all of the families walking through our doors at My Urban Toddler. While your children may be much younger, many of you are experiencing your own version of these same emotions.
Maybe it's the first day of preschool.
Maybe it's kindergarten.
A new classroom. A new teacher. A new routine.
Maybe your little one is nervous. Maybe you're the one holding back tears.
The truth is, every season of parenting asks us to let go just a little more.
Change is hard.
But change is also where so much of the magic happens.
It's where our children discover they are braver than they imagined. It's where they meet friends who shape their childhood. It's where they learn new skills, gain confidence, solve problems, and come home bursting with stories they can't wait to tell us.
We don't get to keep them little forever.
Our job isn't to keep them from growing. It's to give them the confidence to step into the world knowing they'll always have a place to come home to.
When my college kids come back through the front door, they return with new perspectives, funny stories, and experiences that have helped shape who they're becoming. And while saying goodbye is never easy, watching them grow into capable, kind, independent adults is worth every bittersweet moment.
So if you're feeling a little emotional as this new school year begins, know you're not alone.
Whether you're packing a preschool backpack, walking into kindergarten, or helping your college student move into a dorm room, every milestone matters.
At My Urban Toddler, we've always believed that childhood isn't something to rush through. It's something to celebrate.
The first day of school.
The favorite outfit they insist on wearing every week.
The backpack that's almost bigger than they are.
The friendships they'll make.
The memories they'll bring home.
These moments may seem ordinary today, but one day you'll realize they were the days you miss the most.
So take the picture. Give the extra hug. Walk them to the classroom if they'll let you. Listen to every story they tell after school.
Because while saying goodbye is hard, watching them grow into exactly who they're meant to be is one of life's greatest privileges.
Here's to another school year filled with growth, adventure, and memories you'll both treasure for years to come.
With love,
Rosa
