Article: Back to School Without the Last Minute Rush

Back to School Without the Last Minute Rush
As a mom of four, I have experienced back to school season in just about every way possible. I have done the last minute scramble for school supplies, realized too late that someone needed a new backpack, searched for a lunch container the night before school started, and suddenly remembered that picture day was coming when we had nothing planned to wear.
Over the years, I have learned something: getting ready for school does not have to feel like the end of summer.
In fact, I think there is something really fun about slowly getting organized throughout July. Taking care of a few things at a time means that when August arrives, your family can actually enjoy those last beautiful weeks of summer instead of spending them running from store to store.
Make Back to School Shopping Part of the Fun
Kids love having something new to look forward to, and a new school year is a fresh start.
Choosing a backpack can be exciting. Finding a lunch system that actually works for your child can make mornings easier. Even small things like fun writing utensils, a new water bottle, school themed claw clips or earrings, or a great first day outfit can help build excitement for what is ahead.
At My Urban Toddler, we are putting together a back to school collection that goes beyond clothing. We want to help families think about the whole school day, from what kids wear to how they carry their lunch, organize their things, and feel prepared for a new year.
And, of course, do not forget about picture day!
It always seems to arrive sooner than expected. Having one or two outfits ready in advance means you are not searching for the right dress, shirt, sweater, or accessory the night before.
Use Summer for Little Confidence Builders
Back to school preparation is not only about buying things.
Summer is also a great time to spend a few relaxed minutes here and there working on basic skills. Reading together, practicing letters and numbers, working on handwriting, doing puzzles, playing games, and using activity books can all help kids keep learning without making summer feel like school.
For younger children especially, a little practice can be a wonderful confidence builder.
The goal is not to turn summer into a classroom. It is simply to help children feel familiar and comfortable with some of the skills they will use when they return to school.
Ten minutes of reading before bed. A puzzle on a rainy afternoon. Practicing writing their name. Playing a game that involves counting, matching, memory, or taking turns.
These little moments add up, and they can be fun.
A Little at a Time
My advice as a mom is to spread it out.
Pick out the backpack one week. Figure out the lunch system the next. Take inventory of clothes and shoes before buying more. Put together a small collection of school supplies. Choose the first day outfit and think ahead about picture day.
There is no reason to do it all in one exhausting weekend.
My Urban Toddler is here to help families get ready in a way that feels thoughtful, organized, and even fun. We are bringing together backpacks, lunch solutions, colorful writing utensils, accessories, back to school clothing, early learning activities, games, puzzles, books, and confidence builders for children of different ages.
Because getting ready for a new school year can be exciting.
And because childhood is happening right now, including those last wonderful weeks of summer. Getting organized a little earlier means more time for the pool, more late summer dinners outside, more family adventures, and a little less rushing when that first school morning finally arrives.
